2014 Lip Trends: Say Yes to Orange
While the calendar says winter is officially over, we are not quite out of the woods yet. Now is a great time to gear up on trends so that when it finally does start to warm up; you’ll be a trend master.
Staying on trend is going to be fun this summer. Thee “it” color will be orange when it comes to lips. It’s popping up everywhere! Surprisingly enough, orange and corals are colors that complement many, if not just about all, complexions. Wearing coral or orange gives you a different option as opposed to red. It goes really well with some of the popular wardrobe colors such as mint green, orchid and other pastels. We will also discuss some other color options a little later.
Where To Buy & How to Wear
Orange and corals can be worn during the day as well as at night. During the day, you may opt for a lipgloss. It’ll give you just enough “pop” and color for daytime wear. Smashbox just came out with new gloss for its Be Legendary line. The two coral shades are Gingerly (a warm coral-pink shade) and Melondrama (a shimmery coral). These retail for $20 and can be purchased at www.smashbox.com, Sephora or Ulta.
Another lipgloss line to try is by Bobbi Brown. The Nectar and Nude collection in new for Spring. The lip glosses come in limited edition glosses and high glosses. There are many to choose from and you are sure to find a shade or shades that work well for you. This can be found on-line at www.bobbibrown.com or at your nearest department store such as Nordstrom,Macy’s or Saks.
Lastly, Inglot has a really neat orange high-shine gloss that is on sale for $8 (50% off) while supplies last. It’s called AMC lipgloss in #545. Go to www.inglot.com to check it out. Click on the “Special Offers” section to order the gloss. It’s multi-dimensional mood gloss that conforms to your complexion. I find it to be pretty neat if you want something that is just a little bit different.
If you are looking for something bolder with a little more staying power, opt for a lipstick.
There are quite a few beauties that will complement your complexion. One of my fave orange family lipsticks is MAC’s Lady Danger. It’s a matte coral and (in my mind) is the sister of MAC’s Ruby Woo (a bold, matte red). In the Bobbi Brown Nectar and Nude collection, I would suggest trying the pot rouge by the name of Hibiscus. It’s a “multi-tasker" that serves as a lip color and blush. For $26, that’s two products in one! While these will work on just about everyone, I did want to mention that olive and brown complexions will also do very well with orange and coral shades that have some gold in them. These are usually frost shades. MAC has two for you to check out: CB 96 and Meltdown.
Remember that while orange and coral shades are in this season; there are other shades that are going to just as beautiful. Pinks, fuchsias and purples are beautiful too. Bold is in! Treat yourself to some new lipstick or lipgloss. It’s an easy way to update your makeup “wardrobe.” Have fun and Happy Spring!
I had the pleasure of guest blogging for a fellow makeup artist, Dr. G. She is a doctor and makeup artist. Talk about a great combination! She is based on the East Coast.

The new face of Bobbi Brown is the lovely Ms. Kate Upton.
The classic beauty is featured on the beauty giant's website this month with products and a look for you to duplicate. The look featured is simple, clean beauty that is easy to achieve. The products are pretty basic: foundation, blush, lipstick, eyeshadow and even though we don't see it there, mascara. I would definitely expect this from Bobbi Brown because clean beauty is her signature. This is the perfect time to try a new look for Spring.
Bobbi Brown has done it again!
So we're 8 days in and I'm a little late but wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Women's Month.
I love to see women celebrated! In my opinion it really can't be done enough. There are so many of us who hold it down everyday and do what we gotta do! I'm just sayin'. There are so many great examples of women we have to follow. Not only in mainstream but in our day-to-day lives. I have more than a few of them and love them all.
So to all the women out there, take a little time to pamper yourself (a little more than usual) this month. It's a good time for reflection and to celebrate your achievements. It's also a good time to determine what big, wonderful, awesome goal your go after next.
Enjoy and cups up ladies!
Well, what can I say? It's 2014 Oscar night. Awards season is always a joy for me to watch as an artist. I like to see what the stars are wearing and what trends will be incorporated into mainstream.
There are a few faves. I enjoyed the grace and beauty of Lupita Nyong'o and Angelina Jolie. The hair, makeup and dresses worn by both were just right. The beauty team for both of these lovely ladies nailed it. The hair, makeup and gowns were just in perfect balance. No one element overpowered the other which is not always an easy achievement. These are not the only ladies who looked beautiful. Everyone really did look well. The elegance of Hollywood was alive and well at the Oscars this year. The makeup was beautiful and went well with the makeup and hair.
The men were looking well too. What did you think about Harrison Ford's earring? He wore that didn't he? That earring caused a little buzz on social media.
It's hard to believe that we are wrapping up another awards season soon.
Congrats to the young ladies who won in the category of makeup and hair for a film. It is really great to see peers doing well and winning for their efforts. Without hair, makeup and costume, a transformation into character can not fully take place.
I must say that it was something special to see Lupita Nyong'o win for Best Supporting Actress. Her speech was something epic. It wasn't just her words but her charm and grace. One of the best lines of the night was from her acceptance speech. She reminded us that "no matter where you are from, your dreams are valid."
As far as the men go, my fave of the night was Matthew McConaughey. His speech was something epic too. He definitely has a way of making you love him. :) Well maybe I should say he has a way of making ME love him. LOL! He just has such a charming way about him.
Congrats to all winners! Until next year!
In my last blog post we covered how to tell if mascara has gone bad. Hopefully that will help you decide whether to keep or toss.
Let's discuss powder products. Powder products usually include blushes, setting powders, etc. These products last a lot longer than mascara. As a matter of fact, you can easily keep these products for up to a year. A way to tell that these products are no longer effective is by their appearance. Sometimes they tend to change colors or fade. The color and effectiveness of the product should be as strong now as it was when your purchased. So if the product is not performing well, it's time to toss.
Powder products can also smell. The smell is not fresh. It can smell old. If it smells old, it's time to get rid of it.
Do yourself a favor and keep your face and body free of breakouts for the sake of holding on to an old product. Breakouts just aren't worth it.
From time to time, we all have to do it-get rid of our makeup and replace it with new product.
Why? Well, makeup, like anything else gets old and has to be replaced. If not, you might as well put a petri-dish full of bacteria and other yucky stuff on your face. It's the same thing. Old makeup can carry bacteria and cause your skin to break out. Why go through a breakout if you don't have to?
So, you may be wondering how to tell if mascara is bad. Well, it's pretty simple. There are three ways to spot a batch gone bad. The first way to keep tabs on when you purchased the product. Out of all makeup products, mascara is one that you will need to replace sooner than most. It will last you about 3-4 months. Some tubes will last longer than others.
Another way to tell if your mascara is gone bad is by its color. For instance, if you originally purchased black mascara that has since turned charcoal gray, it's time to replace that bad boy.
Lastly, another sure fire way to tell when you need to replace your product is to use the nose method. What's the nose method? Using your nose to smell the product. If the product is rancid, you will know. It smells funny-not all nice and brand new. The smell is indescribable but you will know it, for sure.
Let's recap. . .mascara is a great product and will definitely enhance the eye. It's the easiest and quickest way to do so. As a matter of fact, most women use it daily. In order to ensure you have the freshest mascara, you want to keep it no longer than 3-4 months (as a general rule of thumb). If you aren't able to keep up with when you purchased your tube, no problem. All you have to do is use the sniff method. The sniff method is simply smelling your mascara. If it smells funny, toss it. You will know when it's time. The rancid smell will try to take your nose off! So not really, but it definitely will not smell good.
Hey there! Just a quick note to all of you on this day.
Yesterday, we had an icy, snowy, cold day. Today, the weather is beautiful! You know it's been a cold, long, brutal winter when about 54 degrees feels like 75 or 80 on a perfect spring day. People had windows down, music blasting and you could see people genuinely appeared happy. Much of the snow and ice we saw yesterday, is gone today.
Enjoy your day and this long, holiday weekend and oh, yeah Happy Valentine's Day! Today and this weekend is a perfect time to wear red lipstick. Pink works too. Pair it with some mascara and you'll be good to go!
